Jaume Geli

From writing the earth.

The written word, unlike the oral word, can survive for centuries, even if its generation was a one-off event, the result of a diversion or a necessity. Often, the end of the vital period of a meaning goes hand in hand with the disuse or disappearance of that which gives it its name, be it an object, a concept or a place.

Of the many ways we imagine of approaching a place, here we speak of trying to do so through its speech. Halfway between archaeology and anthropology, the semantic range of a land provides us with the knowledge and intuition to opt for deeper readings; the creative one, for example, that which allows us to liberate and condense thoughts based on our own methodologies or anarchies.

In a different way to linguistics, the artist can understand the combination of letters as a singular plastic matter; with temporal and spatial, intergenerational and territorial dynamics; with its own biology of hatching, mutation, latency and elision; with symbolic, metaphorical or associative contents, among others. Similarly, he understands the land as the cradle of the word, created from the spark of intense contact between human beings and landscape.

We carved endless semantic fields with phonetic tools; we cultivated vowels and consonants in the furrows of our language; year after year we did nothing but harvest words to fill our mouths and baskets. Now, in an attempt to return, to face the points of time, place and word in the same light, Jaume Geli approaches some ruined country huts, the very metaphor of an instant, the one we are living in, in which the stones, like the lexicon, are in danger of being swallowed up by the soil from which they have emerged.
