Josep Guinovart i Bertran

(Barcelona 1927 - December 12, 2007)

Josep Guinovart i Bertran was born in Barcelona on March 20, 1927. His paternal family is of Tarragona origin and the mother agramuntina. This geographic duality is constantly reflected in the work of the artist: the infinite blue of the Mediterranean and the warm ochres of L'Urgell.

From very young he begins at the family workshop as a wall painter, an office that he later claims in one of his works. Join the School of Painting Teachers, at the School of Arts and Crafts and at the FAD classes. In 1953, thanks to a scholarship from the French State, he moved to Paris where he thoroughly learned the work of Cézanne and Matisse, who, along with Miró and Gaudí, will be his most important influences.

In 1954, together with other artists, they founded the ephemeral group Taüll, which brings together the avant-garde creators of those years. He participated in the 1st Spanish-American Biennial of Art, Madrid (1951), the 1st Biennial of Alexandria (1955), the São Paulo Biennials (1957 and 1959), and the Venice Biennale (1952,1958,1962, 1982).

In his early stage, he painted simple themes of a popular nature, treated with an extraordinary quality of drawing and a striking sense of color, which later acquired social intention.
He gradually abandoned representation and forms a new universe where matter and elements become their language.

Josep Guinovart, a polyhedral figure, left its mark in many fields beyond purely pictorial: in the world of theater, architecture, tapestry, sculpture, illustrations, and many others.
Sensitive to all visual and vivid stimuli, we discover in his work the traces of the trips and experiences that he supposed for him before and after (Paris, Algeria, Mexico, New York ...).

During his long career he received the most relevant prizes and distinctions in the world of the arts.
In 1994, thanks to the insistence of the then Mayor of Agramunt, Mr. Josep Huguet, the Espai Guinovart Foundation was inaugurated in Agramunt, a place where Guinovart collects his memories of the city linked to his roots and to his war records

Untiring worker died on December 12, 2007 brush in hand leaving a very important legacy of works that can be seen in museums and art centers around the world.

JOSEP GUINOVART BERTRAN

1927 Born in Barcelona on March 20th.

1937-38 Estada a Agramunt durant la Guerra Civil espanyola

1944-46 He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts, Llotja, in Barcelona (night classes).

1946 Obtains a grant from the Fomento de las Artes Decorativas (FAD) to attend a natural drawing course (human figure).

1947 Drawing classes at the FAD.

1948 Opening his first individual exhibition: Galeria Syra, Barcelona.

1951 He devotes himself fully to painting.
He made his first etchings: Homage to García Lorca from the Cobalto Editorial, Barcelona.

1952 He obtained a scholarship from the French State to go to study in Paris.

1953 Stay nine months in Paris. Visit Belgium, Holland and Germany.

1962 Illustrates the book Poesies, by Salvat Papasseit, of Editorial Ariel, Barcelona.

1966 Obtains the special prize of ADI / FAD for Study of the way, Barcelona.

1971 Cesáreo Rodríguez-Aguilera publishes the book Guinovart, from the collection Monografías de Artistas Españoles, Ministry of Education and Science, Madrid.

1978 Donated at the Museum of Modern Art of Barcelona of a set of more than one hundred polychrome wood sculptures, called Contorn-Entorn, presented at the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona the previous year.

1980 Exhibition in the rooms of the National Library of Madrid, organized by the Ministry of Culture, General Direction of Fine Arts, Archive and Libraries.

1981 Obtains the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize for Plastic Arts.
José Corredor-Matheos publishes the book Guinovart, the art in freedom, of Edicions Polígrafa, Barcelona.

1982 Scenography, in the way of Frieze Run, in tribute to the Guernica, in the New York gallery The Exhibition Space, in Soho.
He is selected as one of the Spanish representatives at the XL Bienal of Venice, where he occupies the central hall of the Spanish pavilion with Entorn.
Obtains the National Prize of Plastic Arts, Madrid.

1983 The Government of Catalonia grants the Cross of Saint George.

1984 He is appointed by the French State Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

1987 Receives the CEOE Foundation Prize, Madrid.

1989 Antinational exhibition Guinovart, itinerary 1948-1988. L'Hospitalet de Llobregat-Esslingen am Neckar-Bochum-Hamburg-Lleida-Girona-Tarragona (from November 1989 to February 1991).

1990 Obtains the National Prize of Plastic Arts of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

1993 The French State grants the badge of Official of the Order of Arts and Letters.

1994 Agramunt is inaugurated at Espai Guinovart, the headquarters of the foundation that bears its name.

1995 Obtained the ACCA Award (Catalan Association of Art Critics) at the Guinovart Area of ​​Agramunt.
