Carles Pujol

Chance

Carles Pujol Cullell (Barcelona, 1947) is one of the Catalan artists who pioneered the introduction of new technologies in the work of art, proposing video experiences since 1975, which he incorporated into his installations. . In that conceptual era he did not detach his projects from a pictorial perspective, as if the multimedia image allowed an extension of painting, to bring his reflections on geometry, to a spatial reality. From the concept of space-canvas and a minimalist synthesis came to space-time and to treat the surface of the walls and the floor of the rooms as an abstract three-dimensionality. Video monitors or projections acted as propositions not far removed from the more reductionist painters.

His career has only deepened this analysis of geometry and space, becoming a reference author for the constancy of his design and alternative language.

The installation he now presents at the Espai Guinovart closes a cycle of a trilogy of interventions that promote the demystification of certain classical attributes of the artistic tradition. With "Installation for a Canvas of 72" he recalled an early work of his pictorial production subjecting it to a recorded construction process, where he accentuated the autonomy of art in the face of the materialization of its objects. In "Registres" he argued the consequentiality of art, eschewing the mythology of originality that surrounds the assimilation of the artist as a genius, and in "L'atzar" (five drawings and a computer) he closes the cycle with a attention to chance and its infinity of variables starting from a given form generated by a text by Mallarmé that admits all the possibilities of the fortuitous encounter with the spectator. digital aesthetics.

If painting is a mental matter, in the age of electronic arts it should not only have plausibility and smell of turpentine.
